Q: How can I identify the best journals in my field?

Detailed Question -

I wonder how, in my area of biomechanics, balance and electromyography, could I list down the best journals and the ones with the best impact factor?

Is it only by checking the articles that I read in my research? Is there another way to search for the key ones?

Answer:

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is an online directory that lists down and provides access to high quality open access, peer-reviewed journals. Conducting an advanced search will give you a list of good journals in your field.

Another way to get an idea of good journals in your field would be to check the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) list of journals. Here too, you can run a search by subject category.

Apart from this, you can speak to your professors, peers, and seniors. They will be able to give you an idea of the quality journals in your field. Last, but not the least, as you have mentioned, you can make a note of the journals that you come across through articles that you read.

Answer:

The ideal way to list down the best journals would be using the subject as a keyword search. For example, you can visit reputed publishers like Taylor and Francis or open access directory (DOAJ) and search for the subject (biomechanics, balance, etc).

As a result, you will get the top journals of the related subject.

But make sure you examine the selected journal’s website thoroughly to avoid landing on predatory publishers.

Here is a list of few biomechanics journals for your reference;

  • International Biomechanics

  • Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering

  • Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering: Imaging & Visualization

  • Sports Biomechanics, etc

Also, you can refer to the below article before choosing the right journal.
